I may be biased, being a girl who has loved football since I was young. (Ah, those ’85 Chicago Bears!) And as a mom, seeing your kids do just about anything brings you joy. But I super puffy heart LOVE youth football. I especially love this player, MY player! They call him “Tim” on the field. But he’ll always be BooBoo to me! I love his goofy laugh and his crazy smarts. But there’s something about the intensity in his eyes when he straps up that helmet that keeps me up out of me seat every Saturday as I watch him and his team take the field.
Yes, these boys are currently winless after two weeks. And their coach, overall is NOT happy with a lack of heart. Again, I may be biased but the look in his eyes, the stink of his gear and my momma bear instincts know that THAT BOY, he’s giving it all his has. He loves the game. And I couldn’t possibly love watching him anymore than I do!
All the time and money spent are completely worth that single moment when your child walks off the field sweaty and smelly but confident and happy. To know that he loves being part of something bigger than himself, challenging himself to be and do better is worth getting soaked in a torrential down pour after driving over an hour to get to a game that is delayed. I wouldn’t give up anything, including my brand new $40 sports umbrella that assured us that we didn’t see a single drop of rain for the rest of the day, because I love it all. Every chaotic, crabby moment I spend is all worth it in the end for the friends and memories being made on that field every weekend!
Watching these boys, win or lose, reminds me that I need to continue to fight and work hard for the things I want. Winning doesn’t come easy, but nothing worth having every does!
