White Sox hoping for Konerko return

Guest post from Gemma Collier

white soxChicago White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf has admitted he is hopeful Paul Konerko will make the decision to re-sign with the franchise despite last season’s dismal campaign. In what was the Sox worst season since 1970, there have been a lot of movements behind the scenes since the end of the year, including Konerko’s initial decision not to yet sign up for what would be his 16th season as a White Sox player.

Konerko’s below-par season was one of the key reasons behind the White Sox’ struggles throughout the year. The 37-year old said at the end of last season that he felt he would only be used in a part-time role if he played next season, which would be a tough step down for a player who has been an integral part of the White Sox for the past 15-years.

Last year’s losing record has clearly had an impact on the White Sox fans hopes for next year, not to mention with the 2014 Betfair MLB odds, but there has been some significant moves made to ensure 2013 isn’t another waste of a year for the franchise.

White Sox chairman Reinsdorf made it clear the decision regarding Konerko’s future was down to whether or not the six-time All Star felt he wanted to play another season.

“He’s earned the right to come back if he wants to come back. He’s been the most popular player in the last 15 years that we’ve had. He’s a terrific teammate. He’s our captain. He just has to make a decision whether he wants to come back or not.”

On the back of a disappointing 63-99 finish in 2013, the White Sox have been busy getting ready for next season and wasting little time in ensuring next year isn’t a repeat of what happened last season. As well as agreeing to a six-year, $68-million deal with Cuban free-agent first baseman/designated hitter Jose Abreu, the franchise have kept Adam Dunn under contract for one more season and Jeff Keppinger for two more seasons.

While those signings will have boosted the White Sox ahead of next season, the management will know how beneficial it would be to the younger players in the squad to have Konerko there next season.
